The National Ballet Company returns to perform Romeo and Juliet this Christmas season. It will be on stage from 11 to 28 December at the Camões Theatre in Lisbon.
Created in 1962 for the Stuttgart Ballet, John Cranko's Romeo and Juliet, with music by Sergei Prokofiev, is now considered a masterpiece of the classical repertoire. His choreographic approach is deeply theatrical, combining technical precision with great expressive power.
Cranko transforms dance into dramatic language, subtly exploring the emotional dilemmas of the characters and the weight of the fate that condemns them.
Prokofiev's music, composed between 1935 and 1936, complements the narrative with its orchestral richness, alternating between the dramatic violence of family rivalries and the delicacy of more intimate moments.
This production, which premiered at the CNB in 2001 with costumes by António Lagarto, sets by João Mendes Ribeiro and photography by Daniel Blaufuks, quickly became a reference point in the Company's repertoire.
More than a tragic love story, Romeo and Juliet is a timeless portrait of youth, courage and hope in the face of violence and intolerance.
