Take a seat... chair design in Portugal

A new cultural exhibition at Roca Lisboa Gallery, “Take a seat... Chair design in Portugal” that seeks to outline the historical journey of chair design in the national context.

Free entry exhibition that can be visited Monday to Friday between 10.30 a.m. and 5.30 p.m. at Roca Lisboa Gallery.

The new cultural exhibition at Roca Lisboa Gallery, “Take a seat... Chair design in Portugal”, arises in the wake of the series of conversations that took place between 2021 and 2022 and seeks to outline the historical journey of chair design in the national context.

The star performer in this exhibition is the Chair in its most varied permutations. The aim is to record the development—and trace out the historical journey—of chair design in Portugal through the testimonies of several designers who have created this piece of furniture for sitting down. It reports on some of the most important—and historically significant—examples from the participants from this series of conversations that now becomes and exhibition.

Through pieces created by Carmo Valente, António Garcia, Daciano da Costa, Nuno Ladeiro, Toni Grilo, Marco Sousa Santos, Paulo Parra, Pedro Silva Dias and Daniel Caramelo, we take a look at the chair as a barometer of the cultural and social circumstances that affected the country at different times and attempt to sketch an outline of the second half of the 20th century around chair design.

The exhibition is inspired in the group of conversations entitled “Take a seat... Chair design in Portugal” and exhibits not only the pieces but also the interviews with their creators, where they explain the origin and inspiration of their creations in conversation with architect Pedro Novo, the exhibition's curator.

“Take a seat... chair design in Portugal”, which opened on 30 June, is free to visit and can be seen Monday to Friday from 10.30 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. at Roca Lisboa Gallery until October 2022.
