Kaidanes, or ghost stories, originate from an ancient popular game. Groups of people would gather at night to tell the strangest and most inexplicable tales they knew, a competition that would eventually create a literary genre based on tales from various parts of Japan and China.

These bizarre stories embody the hope that the universe has a kind of corrective mechanism, that injustices will be avenged, if not in this life, then in the next. If ghosts did not exist, we would have to invent them, because we need to make sense of the idea that the past rarely moves on and disappears. Perhaps that is why these narratives hold such fascination for us.

Okamoto Kidô, one of the most original authors of Japanese popular literature, devoted much of his life to researching Japanese folk mythology. He is the author of short stories inspired by ancient legends and myths, known as kaidanes. In this creation, we propose to draw on the author's fantastical universe, in particular three of his short stories, to create a show for the whole family.
