Statuary Route

In Parque das Nações, by the river, the statue of Catherine of Braganza honours the Portuguese queen who, on marrying Charles II of England, is said to have introduced the custom of tea to the British court. A symbol of the historic ties between Portugal and the world, in one of Lisbon's most modern districts.

In Parque das Nações, the Sun-Man by Jorge Vieira is one of the most iconic sculptures of 20th-century Portuguese public art. The stylised figure, devoted to the sun, symbolises energy and vitality, and has become one of the visual landmarks of Lisbon's eastern riverfront.

In Praça 25 de Abril, in Braço de Prata, stands “Lisboa”, the city's largest public sculpture at 25 metres tall. Created by the artist José de Guimarães and painted in the colours of the Portuguese flag, the work honours the anonymous builders who raised Lisbon, in one of the newest and least-visited squares on the route.

In Parque das Nações, the Iberian Lynx by Bordalo II is built entirely from rubbish and reclaimed materials, denouncing the extinction risk facing this species unique to the Iberian Peninsula. One of the most photographed works on the riverfront, it is a symbol of environmentally conscious Portuguese street art.

In Praça do Município, in front of the City Hall, the sculpture “Grade” by Jorge Vieira forms part of the public-art trail through Lisbon's historic centre. With his unique sculptural language, the artist left one of the most singular examples of contemporary Portuguese sculpture in the heart of the Baixa.

At the viewpoint over Ribeira d'Ilhas beach, symbol of the Ericeira World Surfing Reserve, this statue by José Queiroz represents the collective duty to protect the sea and the waves. Unveiled in 2017, it has become a landmark of the town and an invitation to environmental awareness, beside one of the most iconic beaches in Portuguese surfing.

By the Fontainhas roundabout, in Setúbal, the “Choco Pessoa” sculpture pays humorous tribute to the city's most iconic dish, taking its cue from the Fernando Pessoa statue at Café A Brasileira. Seated just like the poet, the cuttlefish invites visitors to take a seat beside it before heading off to taste the real Setúbal fried cuttlefish.

At the Santa Catarina viewpoint, the Adamastor gazes over the Tagus and the Atlantic — the very horizon where, for navigators of old, danger began. Created by Luís de Camões in “The Lusiads” to symbolise the terror of the unknown, this stone giant is today one of Lisbon's most bohemian meeting points, especially at sunset.
