Lisbon Flavours

Eating is an event for a Portuguese. And we take it very seriously. If you ask any Portuguese, they'll offer you right away the best tips for restaurants, bars or dishes.

An absolute must try is the Pastel de Nata. This custard tart filled with a secret recipe cream will make you beg for more. They're so good, you won't have just one Pastel de Nata. Who visits Lisbon, can’t afford to miss the Pastel de Nata sprinkled with cinnamon and sugar.

Being a coastal country, the Fish and the Seafood are amazing. The Bacalhau (salted codfish) is the king, but the queen is the Sardine. Speacilly during the Lisbon Festivities, in June. The grilled Sardines are everywhere as well are the Bifanas (sliced pork on bread).

These are only some of the many excuses the city gives you to leave the diet behind.

Pastel de Nata

The "pastel de nata" is Lisbon’s best-known cake and best served hot, with powdered cinnamon and, preferably, in pairs. Try it in the city’s cafés and patisseries.

The only thing you need to know about this pastry is that the hotter it is and the more caster sugar and cinnamon is sprinkled on it, the better. Its roots can be found in the traditions of convent-style desserts and its ingredients are misleading – very often, the pastel de nata, or “cream pastry”, doesn’t actually contain cream. But its flavour is always sublime, mainly when accompanied by a bica, as the espresso served in Lisbon is traditionally called. Try several, choose the best and remember: a pastel de nata eaten at a pavement café in the sun in Lisbon is always the best thing in the world.
