Money Museum

Come and see Money! The Money Museum presents the theme of money, its history and evolution, in Portugal and throughout the world. (Best Museum 2017)

The Money Museum, which opened to the public in April 2016, is housed in the former church of S. Julião in Lisbon’s Baixa. It showcases the concept of money, its history and developments, both in Portugal and around the world.

There is much to see and do in this Museum: you can share your testimony, virtually mint a coin or print a banknote bearing your profile and face, look through a microscope to see the fibres that make up banknotes, and also exchange, interact, and be inspired by stories from around the world. The Money Museum also offers diverse cultural and educational programmes for all ages, in an original and informative manner, involving the whole family.

Banco de Portugal’s Money Museum has been named 'Best Museum 2017' by the Portuguese Museology Association (Associação Portuguesa de Museologia - APOM).
