Tapada das Necessidades (Park of Necessidades)

The Tapada das Necessidades is one of the best places in Lisbon to walk, read a book or have a picnic. You’ll be enticed by the ponds bordered by exotic plants and extensive grassy areas.

Details

Beside the Palácio das Necessidades, one of the royal residences most cherished by the Braganza dynasty, you’ll find the Tapada das Necessidades. The name was inherited from the former convent founded here by King João V, on the site of an existing hermitage. Queen Maria II chose it as a home and from then on it was permanently occupied. Beside it, the park is one of the best in Lisbon to walk, read a book or have a picnic. The ponds bordered by exotic plants, the English garden and the various pieces of statuary confer the park with a relaxed air, enjoyed by countless kings and queens and now open to everyone, regardless of whether you have a family crest. It’s one of Lisbon’s hipster hotspots, with concerts and sophisticated picnics that are very popular.
