The photographer, based in New York since 1984, uses a series of lived experiences as a starting point to develop a photographic project— a conceptual exercise on the (in)ability to photograph the invisible, “an offensive smell”.
The Portuguese photographer, living at the Chelsea Hotel in New York since 1984, uses a series of episodes experienced in this emblematic place as a starting point to develop a photographic project titled Hyperosmia. These seemingly trivial events proved to be so impactful and disturbing for the artist that they triggered a succession of reactions, ultimately transformed into a conceptual exercise on the (in)ability to capture and deal with an offensive smell.
I had never dealt with this kind of aggression before. The feeling of being attacked by invisible forces which prevent you from breathing. For sound there are earplugs but nothing comparable for the nose.
Rita Barros, NYC, 2024
The presentation of this exhibition, which brings together for the first time the photographic series and the artist’s book produced in 2024, reflects the interest of the Lisbon Municipal Archive – Photography in supporting, hosting, and promoting contemporary photographic projects from diverse contexts of production.
