Statuary Route

In Praça dos Restauradores, two bronze figures immortalise the city's cobblestone pavers: one carving the stone, the other striking it with a mallet. Framed by a Portuguese pavement design recreating the Boat of Saint Vincent, the city's emblem, these statues pay tribute to a craft that shaped Lisbon's streets, stone by stone.

In Largo Trindade Coelho, beside the Church of São Roque, this bronze statue portrays a lottery-ticket seller — flat cap on his head, cigarette dangling from the corner of his mouth and a winning ticket in hand. Touching the ticket is, for many Lisboners, a gesture of good luck that keeps alive the memory of a profession now all but vanished.

Cast in bronze at the door of Café A Brasileira, in Chiado, Fernando Pessoa watches over the city that so inspired his work. One of the most photographed statues in Lisbon, it is now a must-visit meeting point for anyone wanting to sit beside the poet and feel the bohemian, literary pulse of the neighbourhood.

At the centre of the square that bears his name, the statue of Luís de Camões rises surrounded by figures of other great names in Portuguese letters and history. In Largo Barão de Quintela, the statue of Eça de Queirós pays homage to one of the greatest names in Portuguese literature. The female figure accompanying him — a symbol of Truth unveiled by Fiction — has made the work one of the city's most talked-about and photographed monuments since its unveiling in 1903.

In the heart of Largo do Chiado, the statue of the poet António Ribeiro — known as “O Chiado” — gave its name to the entire neighbourhood that now surrounds it. A satirical figure of the 16th century, he presides today over one of Lisbon's most popular meeting points, ringed by open-air cafés, historic shops and cultural life.

In Largo Santo António da Sé, in front of the church marking the saint's birthplace, the statue of Saint Anthony is a place of pilgrimage and devotion — especially during the Santos Populares festivities in June, when all of Lisbon celebrates the city's most beloved patron.

In Largo das Portas do Sol, overlooking the River Tagus and the Alfama district, the statue of Saint Vincent, patron of Lisbon, recalls the legend of the boat guided by ravens that brought the saint's relics to the city — a symbol that still features on Lisbon's flag and coat of arms today.

Built in 1959 on the heights of Almada, the Sanctuary of Christ the King rises 110 metres above the Tagus, arms open towards Lisbon. From the viewpoint at the top, accessible by lift, you can take in the whole city and the 25 de Abril Bridge in one of the most iconic panoramas over the capital.

At the centre of the roundabout that bears his name, the statue of the Marquês de Pombal stands 36 metres tall, flanked by a lion symbolising power. It honours the statesman who rebuilt Lisbon after the 1755 earthquake and is today one of the city's most visible landmarks, at the hinge between the Baixa and the Avenidas Novas.

At the centre of Rossio, one of Lisbon's most emblematic squares, the column bearing the statue of King Pedro IV has dominated the space since 1870. At the centre of Praça do Comércio, facing the River Tagus, the equestrian statue of King José I is one of the most imposing in Lisbon. Erected in 1775 by Machado de Castro, it celebrates the king who drove the Pombaline reconstruction of the city after the earthquake, in one of the capital's most photographed spots.

Beside the walls of São Jorge Castle, the sculpture of Afonso Henriques recalls Portugal's first king and the conquest of Lisbon from the Moors in 1147. Standing in the city's oldest neighbourhood, it is an essential stop for anyone visiting one of Lisbon's most iconic viewpoints. A bronze replica of Soares dos Reis's work in Guimarães, it was gifted to Lisbon in 1947, during the commemorations of the 800th anniversary of the city's conquest.

On the Alameda da Universidade, the red sculptural ensemble by Charters de Almeida acts as a symbolic gateway into the University City. Relocated from Ribeira das Naus in 2012, this large-scale work is one of the most striking examples of contemporary public art in Lisbon.

At the centre of one of Lisbon's busiest roundabouts, the statue of Ferdinand Magellan honours the navigator who organised the first circumnavigation of the globe. Gifted by Chile in 1950, the monument depicts the explorer standing on the stylised prow of a ship.

Rising beside the River Tagus in Belém, the Monument to the Discoveries celebrates Portugal's navigators with a 52-metre caravel prow, headed by the figure of Prince Henry the Navigator. From the viewpoint at the top, reached by lift, you can see the entire riverfront and the iconic Compass Rose set into the pavement.

By the river in Belém, the replica of the Santa Cruz seaplane marks the feat of Sacadura Cabral and Gago Coutinho, who in 1922 made the first aerial crossing of the South Atlantic. Suspended over a base evoking the waves of the sea, it is a landmark in the history of Portuguese aviation.

On Avenida da Liberdade, near Rua do Salitre, this monument in stone and bronze honours the more than five thousand Portuguese soldiers who died in the First World War. Unveiled in 1931, it combines the figure of Fame with that of a fallen soldier, beneath the inscription “In the service of the Homeland, the effort of the People”.

On the Passeio D. Maria Pia, beside the Cascais Citadel, the statue of King Carlos I depicts the monarch aboard the yacht Amélia, binoculars in hand, gazing out over the bay. Unveiled in 2008, on the centenary of the regicide, it honours the king who advanced Portuguese oceanography from Cascais.
