Lisbon’s most iconic viewing point, or miradouro, is inside the Castelo de São Jorge and has a monumental panoramic view of the city and river, dominating the whole surrounding landscape. It was built at the end of the 18th century, but its supporting walls date from the 14th. Much of it was totally rebuilt in 1940 in a massive preservation exercise. The miradouro is inside the castle and is an ideal place to rest after wandering up the streets to reach it. Its cannons point towards the river in an eternal challenge to whoever dares to invade this proud city. With endless shade offered by magnificent examples of indigenous trees, this is an obligatory place to stop and contemplate Lisbon.
