African Lisbon

This food – simple and culturally rich – is prepared as a ritual and served as a tradition.

Igreja da Graça

Monument

The Graça Church and Convent are situated in Largo da Graça, within the civil parish of São Vicente. Both date back to the inception of the Portuguese nationality, in the 13th century. They were later rebuilt in the 16th century, and restored after the 1755 earthquake. Situated on the castle’s neighbouring hill, the view over Lisbon is both stunning and charming.

Igreja de S. Domingos

Monument

Discover one of Lisbon’s most emblematic churches, where extreme beauty reveals a sinister past. Between Rossio and Praça da Figueira, you can find the Church of São Domingos, one of the most beautiful churches in the city. It was built in the 13th century, by order of D. Sancho II, but the works, renovations, earthquakes and fires completely changed its initial medieval structure. Inside this church, where all the national and royal solemnities were celebrated, from funerals to baptisms and weddings; history also tells a darker tale. Those convicted of heresy in the neighbouring Palácio da Inquisição, were sent to this church before being publicly executed in Rossio.

Jardim Botânico Tropical

Point of Interest

Discover the Tropical Botanical Garden, also known as the Colonial Garden, created in 1906 and fully dedicated to teaching and scientific knowledge. It has had many names, but the plants which inhabit the Tropical Botanical Garden, situated in one of Lisbon’s prime areas, bear names that are harder to pronounce. Specimens of more than 500 perennial species, of tropical or subtropical origin, represent elements that are in some cases already extinct in their natural habitats, such as Ginkgo Biloba. The Tropical Botanical Garden, also known as the Colonial Garden, was created as the Tropical Agriculture Museum Garden, since it was part of the colonial agricultural service, both in its scientific and didactic components. As an integral part of the School of Agriculture for many decades now, its mission today is to showcase the Tropical Research Institute and host relevant thematic exhibitions.
