New exhibitions at the Communications Museum

This year at the Communications Museum, we have focused the temporary exhibitions on the valve universe and have organised an exhibition and an art showcase dedicated to the theme.

The “In the beginning, there was a valve… from the analogical to the digital signal” exhibition presents a variety of valves from the 20th century and explores how these objects played a central role in the development of the communication industry.

In the exhibition, visitors can also see a small laboratory with electric, or thermionic, valves that emerged following Thomas Alva Edison’s experiments. Nowadays, even though the use of valves is quite reduced, they are still to be found in equipment such as microwaves, radars, satellites and hi-fi.

Mechamorphic, by Soraia Domingos, is an art showcase that reutilises valves and other materials that have fallen in disuse. The name “Mechamorphic” resulted from the combination of the words “mechanic” and “metamorphic”.

The “mechanic” element is clearly present in the artwork, whereas the “metamorphic” feature is present in the re-utilisation and new perspective these materials receive. Visitors will recognise certain pieces and see how they have now been given a new life in Soraia Domingos’s artwork, just like the caterpillar becoming a butterfly.
