Point of Interest

The Monument to the Discoveries, which is prominently positioned on the right bank of the River Tagus, was erected in 1940 to honour the historical figures involved in the Portuguese Discoveries. This huge stone caravel was built in 1940 for the Portuguese World Exhibition, a joint-venture between architect Cottinelli Telmo and sculptor Leopoldo de Almeida.

Monument

The Tower of Belém is a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of Lisbon’s most outstanding monuments. A symbol of a seafaring country that set out to discover of the world. To protect the city of Lisbon, King D. João II conceived a pioneering maritime defence project, which became concluded in 1514, with the construction of the Tower of Belém, by architect Francisco de Arruda.

Neo-realism Museum - Vila Franca de Xira

Museum

A museum dedicated to researching and presenting the neo-realistic movement, one of the most decisive cultural movements of the Portuguese 20th century, with the aim of preserving and dignifying decades of artistic and cultural creation along with political and social intervention. The museum, which initially evolved around the neo-realistic movement's archives and bibliography, is structured between two major wings: the Documentation Centre, which includes the library, estate collections of the movement’s most significant authors, and a visual arts collection; and the Exhibition Area.

The new public library and cultural facility named “Factory of Words”, by architect Miguel Arruda, is a unique and astonishing work of architecture located by the river. Here visitors can continuously connect with the surrounding environment with the city on one side, and the river and marshland on the other.

Oficina de Artes Manuel Cargaleiro - Seixal (building and view of the Tagus)

The Manuel Cargaleiro Art Workshop, an architectural project by Siza Vieira, aims to heighten contemporary art in general and the work of master Manuel Cargaleiro in particular. It also strives to promote the Manuel Cargaleiro Foundation collections by including temporary exhibitions and educational activities in its programme, and through partnerships with similar establishments.
