Despite being known alongside the Palmela region for its Setúbal peninula regional wines, Setúbal is also famous for its sublime muscatel. This is one of the most popular fortified wines amongst the Portuguese and the foreigners who have the chance to drink it chilled while sitting at a café in the sun. Ideally aged in oak barrels, it has an orangey aroma and is very intense. Full bodied and velvety, it is a dessert in itself which must be tasted at all cost. The red muscatel, also produced in the region but in smaller quantity, has a more complex nutty aroma and is considered a finer wine. Travel the region’s wine routes to discover its products better, but don’t forget to take a bottle with you to enjoy at home. You’ll see that the sun always shines when you pour a glass.
