Come and discover the most important shopping and business area in Lisbon. The most luxurious side of the city, with its shops selling international labels, lives side by side with top companies, offices and studios. Come and discover the side of the capital where business and pleasure mix in total harmony.
Discover the calm and exclusive area of Avenida da Liberdade, where premium hotels and luxury shops alternate door by door. Here you’ll find some of the major representatives of global brands in shops where the service is as sophisticated as the avenue itself. You’ll also find several old theatres and cinemas converted into alternative venues, some of which with an unforgettable contemporary programme.
If you continue up to Marquês de Pombal, you’ll complete what was once known by the locals as the Passeio Público, or public promenade, and where a large part of the city’s business travel industry is concentrated. The long avenue flanked by acacias and palm trees was heavily inspired by Paris and has extraordinary stone pavements (calçada portuguesa) featuring intricate designs. They beckon you to stroll, admiring the shop windows and stopping for refreshment at one of the various kiosks that dot its length.
Here you’ll find excellent hotels with inviting terraces and top service. This is by far the most elegant and luxurious part of Lisbon. Come and discover it.
The Elevador da Glória is one of the three funiculars in Lisbon.
Sung about in the music of one of the most avant-garde Lisbon bands of the 80s, the Elevador da Glória links Baixa to Bairro Alto – more specifically Praça dos Restauradores to Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcântara.
It lets you turn a steep climb into a romantic moment and was opened in 1885 as the second of its kind in the city. Although it was only electrified in 1915, it still retains its original characteristics.
The counter-circulating pulley system known as the Subida à Glória, for use by both amateur and professional cyclists, has been recently renovated.
But it’s better to enjoy the comfort of the benches and jerks of the ascent to rest a little before seeing the breathtaking view at the miradouro.
Put a cross on your map and go for a wander.
This house, winner of the 1905 Valmor Architecture Award and the former Studio of the painter José Malhoa, was purchased in 1932 by the ophthalmologist and art collector Dr António Anastácio Gonçalves (1888-1965), who used the house to display his impressive collection, which he wished to bestow to the State.
The collection includes a wide variety of objects, in particular Portuguese 19th century naturalist paintings and decorative art pieces, highlighted by an exquisite collection of Chinese porcelain.
Visitors to this house-museum can view the collections in the welcoming and day-to-day ambience of a house that is also a museum.
Besides the display, study and preservation of the permanent collection, the house-museum offers guided thematic visits and artistic expression workshops to foster life-long art learning experiences.
The house-museum also features free concerts, colloquiums and conferences.
In a discrete and elegant street running perpendicular to the Avenida da Liberdade is one of the most interesting areas of Lisbon. Rua Barata Salgueiro has restaurants, companies and a place chosen to protect and preserve Portugal’s cinematic heritage.

It’s worth taking a walk through the gardens designed by the architect Keil do Amaral in 1942 and admire the two paved walkways where the Lisbon Book Fair is held every year. Also visit the Estufa Fria, a unique place in the centre of Lisbon where the lush vegetation coexists with caves and paths, water courses and an atmosphere both wild and romantic. It’s not an oasis in the middle of the city, rather a surreal jungle, right in the heart of the city.
